Feature on Antennas and IFC for Regional Jets
Below are a few excerpts from LARA's April/May 2024 article entitled, "Steering a New Course," written by Lucy Powell.
It's an exciting time for in-flight connectivity, with the advent of low-Earth orbit satellite networks and lighter antenna technologies making in-flight connectivity a real possibility for regional jets.
Whilst in-flight connectivity (IFC) on aircraft is by no means perfect, regional connectivity is experiencing an exciting, watershed moment in the aviation industry.
Bill Milroy, ThinKom’s Chief Technology Officer, is keen to explain the benefits of this antenna for operators who have regional jets in their fleets. “We are top of the heap in terms of lowest drag, lowest fuel burn,” he says, this being something that is “particularly important” on regional jets, both as a cost-saving and environmental measure.
The ThinAir Ka1717 can operate on both GSO (geostationary satellite) and NGSO (non-geostationary) networks, effectively future-proofing it as a solution for airlines to install on their fleets.
